Full Closures of I-805 at East Palomar Street to Resume Sunday
SAN DIEGO – Travelers can expect significant delays in the South Bay as crews continue full nightly closures of Interstate 805 (I-805) between State Route 54 (SR-54) and State Route 905 (SR-905).
According to Caltrans, the closures are needed to accommodate removal of the temporary bridge supports at East Palomar Street Bridge in Chula Vista. Motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible.
All I-805 southbound lanes will be closed Sunday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and on Monday from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. During this time, the connector ramps from eastbound and westbound SR-54 and on-ramps from East Plaza Boulevard, Sweetwater Road, Bonita Road, and Telegraph Canyon Road to southbound I-805 will also be closed. Motorists will be detoured via westbound SR-54, southbound Interstate 5 (I-5), and eastbound SR-905, connecting back to I-805. Northbound lanes will remain open during this time.
Local traffic only will be detoured via Telegraph Canyon Road, Medical Center Drive, Brandywine Avenue, and Olympic Parkway.
On Tuesday evening southbound I-805 will be closed between Telegraph Canyon Road and East Orange Avenue. On Wednesday and Thursday evening the freeway will be closed in the northbound direction. Construction crews will start the closures at 9 p.m. with all lanes closed at midnight. The southbound lanes will open at 5 a.m. and the northbound lanes at 4 a.m. Motorists will be detoured around the nighttime closures via Telegraph Canyon Road, Medical Center Drive, Brandywine Avenue, and Olympic Parkway (the local detour). Trucks will be detoured away from local neighborhoods via I-5 (the primary detour).
Additional closures will be necessary. Residents adjacent to I-805 at East Palomar Street can expect construction noise and lights overnight during these closures.
The work is part of the first phase of the I-805 South Express Lanes Project, a $1.1 billion effort to create a modern new transportation backbone for South County.
The first phase included construction of one carpool lane in each direction between East Naples Street in Chula Vista and State Route 94 in San Diego. It also constructed 10 sound walls. In addition, I-805 will be widened in National City to add a northbound auxiliary lane from SR-54 to East Plaza Boulevard and a southbound through lane at East Plaza Boulevard. Phase 1 is expected to be completed in fall 2015.
